"Wow!" was my reaction after reaching the end of Chronicles of a Royal Pet. For a young writer (college student) to be able to submit a story that is so polished is a real accomplishment, and Mr. Rodgers definitely deserves all the accolades offered in these Amazon reviews.The book is about a girl who turned out to be a princess of a kingdom and the pet monster that she chose to bring into her life. The idea of an ooze or slime as the main character is certainly not original, but the author does a wonderful job in telling the story from the ooze's perspective. What I enjoyed just as much was the way that Mr. Rodgers disdained the dysfunctional royal family (I'm looking at you, Guy Antibes!) as a plot device, and instead attempted to give the royal family a very normal family life and have the family come together to defend the kingdom from various threats.
This YA book is highly recommended to teenage readers, and I look forward to reading the next installment of the Chronicles of a Royal Pet.

There is no way to properly describe how much I love this book, it was so sweet and loving I absolutely adore it. There were even certain parts that made me cry. I don't know if that was the intent of the author but kudos to him. And no they weren't sad scenes but full of love. This book will definitely be one of my favorites are now on. I look forward to reading the rest in the series, and when I'm having a bad day I know I can open this one up and reread it and I'll feel better.
The bad some typos and some odd switches from past to present tense.
The good everything else. I've read a few monster stories; they usually end up evil (which I like) or good in an illogical way (which I don't like). This is the first monster pov I've read that has a believably good monster MC. I enjoyed the story and hope the series lasts.
I was surprised that I liked it as much as I did. When I first read the title I thought it would be another one of those indie books that had way too many grammatical errors but I'm glad I was proven wrong. This book was well thought out and written very well. Their were no glaring grammatical errors and the story kept me entertained throughout. I would recommend this book to anyone who wanted something a little different.
The core concept is intriguing. The characters are interesting people who feel realistic. The pacing is solid, taking time where appropriate and establishing mood properly and balancing apprehension against excitement well. The author is clearly a very talented storyteller, and this should have been a five-star book for me but...
The writing is extremely unpolished, like you would expect from a talented highschooler making fanfic, not a professional author. Occasional improper word choice, frequently mixing up who/whom, jarring transitions between modern colloquialisms and archaic speech patterns (either style would work, but switching between the two sounds terrible), even switching which character is delivering a chunk of exposition mid paragraph. Basic mistakes that even a novice should be able to catch on a quick read-through, left in through publishing like we're reading the rough draft of a great piece of literature.
And the unique perspective of the protagonist and its nonstandard sensory capabilities, which would have added a great deal of depth to the narration if they were taken advantage of properly, is almost completely overlooked. An ooze in this setting can perceive great detail in all directions, even through solid objects, but in a very limited range and without differentiating colors unless specifically focusing on them. But the narration only reflects that in the introductory chapter before diving into lengthy descriptions of the colors of people's fancy outfits on the other side of vast ballrooms, and never mentioning the inside of a cupboard or the contents of someone's pockets again. The protagonist mentions having great difficulty reading facial expressions but reading emotions through an empathic sense, then proceeds to describe everyone's reactions to things in terms of facial expression. It's almost as if the author keeps forgetting who his POV character is.
Overall I did definitely enjoy the book and will certainly be picking up the next in the series, but Mr. Rodgers really needs an editor, or at least a beta reader.
The book tells the story of first year in the life of a rather unique pet, an ooze, of a 13 year old princess in a western fantasy setting with a hint of computer games (adventurers and monsters are at least categorized according as such). The ooze learns what is to be sentient, exploring the world, while protecting his owner against the inevitable sinister plot against her parents (and indirectly herself), earning the attention of higher powers and making a spot for himself in the life of the princess. The books ends with the start of a new phase in the life of the princess and the ooze, danger clearly looming in their future, but not with a direct cliffhanger.
The story is somewhat simple and straight forward with a lot of explanation on the setting, I would have prefered a bit more show instead of tell, but it is well written. I found the point of view from the ooze rather interesting, and the author succeeded decently well in representing at least some aspects of its differences with humans. It is certainly a nice twist to anotherwise well-known story. I am certainly curious what is coming next...
